At last you have bowed the knee to technology and got yourself an iPod Touch. You sit and stare in wonder at the beautiful little thing still in its box that is capable of so many wonderful functions and mysteries.
Where to start?
Mom always said: Start at the beginning. But this thing is so daunting; you don't know where the beginning is! Fear not. Help is on its way. But Mom was right you should start at the beginning. First take it out of the box and take off all the bits of plastic. Now charge it by using a wall socket or plug it in a suitable USB port on your computer.
Once it is charged, you can either use iTunes to set up the iPod Touch or you can register the iPod touch and create an iTunes Store account.
You will notice that there are no “buttons” on your iPod Touch but that it has a smooth screen. Make sure that you don't use any sharp objects to tap on the screen. Use your finger or a blunt pencil or the back of a pen (not the sharp end). Consider getting a protective pouch for this sensitive little wonder, it will prolong its life.
How to turn on your iPod
Click once on the top left edge button on the iPod Touch. (The newest iPod Touch generation has the on/off button on the right side.) Now slide your finger across to where it says “Slide to unlock.”
To turn the iPod off, hold down the top left button then slide to “power off”
If you press the left button only once will turn it into “sleep mode” and it will still use battery power.
Adding Music and Media
From your computer, start iTunes. If you do not have it, you can get it here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ . While your iPod is still plugged into your USB port, your iPod Touch will synchronize with iTunes and you can start using it.
All you have to do to add songs is to click and drag the songs you want from your Library onto your iPod on the left hand sidebar. If you want to delete songs, click on your iPod in iTunes, right click on the song and then press delete, or click once on the song you want to remove and then press the delete key on your keyboard.
Accessing the menu
If you have unlocked the iPod, you will then see the main menu. You have to press the home button; it takes you back to the main menu where ever you are on your iPod.
On the menu page, there are 7 icons on the top or middle area and 4 icons on the bottom. The bottom row is called the dock. It shows on all your home screens for easy access to the applications on it.
Once you have managed all these steps, you will realize that the iPod is virtually a mini computer in your hands, and many of the things you can do on your computer; you can do on the iPod. The secret is to use it often so that you familiarize yourself with its functions and you optimize it to its full capacity.
